BEIRUT: Britain has donated 48 Land Rovers to bolster the Lebanese Army’s capabilities in its fight against terrorism, British Ambassador Tom Fletcher tweeted Friday.

“Just in: 48 more British Land Rovers to help army secure Syrian border from extremists,” Fletcher tweeted along with a photo of the Land Rovers.

He said each Land Rover was fully equipped with the “best” communications, adding that “material to fortify Lebanese Army positions” was also part of the donation.

The ambassador pledged additional aid to the Lebanon earlier this week in meetings with Army commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi and Defense Minister Samir Moqbel.

Lebanon has sought increased foreign aid after militants from the Al-Qaeda-affiliate Nusra Front and the Islamic state of Iraq and Greater Syria overran the border town of Arsal earlier this month, in the worst spillover yet from the three-year Syrian civil war.

The U.K. pledge comes alongside similar promises from the United States and after a $1 billion grant was announced by the king of Saudi Arabia to shore up Lebanese security forces.
